Weird book habit survey

February 28th, 2007 · 11 Comments

Bibliophile horror

I’ve titled the comic above “The End Of The Relationship.” :-)I’ll be in California (yay! no snow!) until late next week and won’t be taking my Wacom tablet, so Inkygirl will likely not be updated until I get back. While I’m away, however, I’m posting a survey to see how many of you are as neurotic as I am when it comes to books.

1. Do you ever put a book face-down on a flat surface?

Does this picture make you uncomfortable?

2. Do you lend your books freely, or only to people you know will take care of them?

3. Do you ever remove the dust jackets off books to protect them? (protect the jackets, that is

)4. How often do you write in your own books? (other than your name, if you’re that reckless)

5. Other than the above, do you have any other odd habits having to do with your books or books in general that you’re willing to ‘fess up to?

You can also see what people have responded in Livejournal.

March is National Novel Editing Month!

February 27th, 2007 · No Comments

Thanks to Erin for telling me about NaNoEdMo, or National Novel Editing Month. Like National Novel Writing Month, there are no prizes, and progress is based on the honour system…i.e. you can cheat, but what’s the point? The purpose of the event is to encourage writers to edit their unfinished novels. The goal: log 50 hours of editing time.

This is SUCH perfect timing for me, yay. I’ve signed up as “Inkygirl.” Hope to see some of you there!

Book-in-a-Week

February 27th, 2007 · 3 Comments

The main purpose of Book-in-a-Week (BIW) is to encourage writing, but the online group also exchanges information, publishing news and kudos. BIW occurs once a month; participants decide on their own goals and submit them to the list the week prior to BIW. “Some members actually finish a book in one week and for others the only time they write is during BIW, thereby giving BIW a double meaning.”

Members include published as well as unpublished writers, and the site was listed in Writer’s Digest 101 Top Web sites of 2006. There’s even a discussion forum as well as a chat room.

For more info, see http://www.book-in-a-week.com/.

Rejection is an inevitable part of being a freelance writer. Moira Allen has a great suggestions about how to cope with rejection in her article on Writing-World.com.
