About Inkygirl

Inkygirl is my weblog for writers, mainly featuring my writing-related cartoons but also other posts of interest to freelance writers. For publishing industry and market info, please see my Market Watch column at Writersmarket.com.

If you have a question about my comics or illustration services, please see this page.
If you want to use or re-post one of my comics, please see this page.

Who are you?

My name is Debbie Ridpath Ohi. I’m a freelance writer and illustrator based in Toronto. I’m author of The Writer’s Online Marketplace (Writer’s Digest Books), and was also the creator/editor-in-chief of Inkspot. You can find more information about me at DebbieOhi.com.

There are also several interviews online, if you’re interested:

Comixtalk interviewed me about comics writing/drawing
WOW!Women On Writing interview
BlogTO interview

What happened to the job listings?

I no longer maintain a separate daily job listing section, sorry. There are already so many good job listing resources that I didn’t feel like duplicating.

I heard you have a list of published writers who were rejected

Yes, you can find it at Writers and Rejection: Don’t Give Up!

Will you mention my site?

If you’d like to recommend a site that you think writers would find useful or interesting, I’d love to hear about it. I may not check it out immediately, but I promise I will eventually. Please don’t nag me, or I promise I won’t. If I don’t, it could be because:

- I don’t like it as much as you do.

- I haven’t gotten around to looking at it yet.

- I don’t think it’s appropriate for mentioning on Inkygirl for some reason.
Sites that I’m unlikely to review: literary e-zines (unless they are paying markets), anything that costs money, personal homepages, books not related to business or craft of writing, writers’ blogs that focus more on their personal lives than writing, contests with entry fees, writing jobs that don’t pay (or pay in royalties, free copies of a book, etc.).

I also don’t tend to list writers’ blogs that have just recently launched…please wait until you have accumulated a reasonable amount of useful writing-related content before telling me to look at your site.

I reserve the right to make exceptions to the above. Please remember that this is still basically a personal weblog, so the sites I mention reflect my own interests and preferences, and are not meant to be a definitive list of The Best Sites For Writers.

My contact information is listed near the bottom of this page, under “How can I contact you?”

Is this another Inkspot?

No. It’s meant to be of interest to writers who are online and does have the word “ink” in the title, but that’s where the similarity ends. There is no e-mail newsletter, no message boards, no articles, no columnists, no massive collection of resource links.

Will you promote my writing event?

Unfortunately I lack the resources/time to promote this sort of thing on Inkygirl, sorry, unless it’s for a very special cause and does not involve a fee.

Will you promote my writing contest?

As long as it doesn’t charge an entry fee AND pays cash prizes, probably.

Thanks for reviewing my site, but the URL has changed. Can you update the link?

Feel free to send me the updated link, but unfortunately I can’t guarantee that I will update the link in my old review listing. I will do my best to mention the updated link in a new listing, however.

How can I contact you?

Here’s my e-mail address.

My snailmail address:
1543 Bayview Ave, Suite 116
Toronto, ON
Canada M4G 3B5

Please don’t put me on your mailing list without my permission.

Be warned that if you write to me asking for advice about where to send your manuscript or particular jobs or markets or an archived job listing or how to get published or whether I’ve heard of (insert name of a publisher, editor, company) here, you will likely get a form letter in response. Sounds curmudgeonly, I know, but unfortunately I get a LOT of these kinds of requests and if I took the time to answer all of them, I would no time left for my own writing or other projects. Thanks for understanding.

– Debbie Ridpath Ohi

Hi, I used to see a page where we could buy t-shirts-will write for chocolate and characters-but I can’t find it now. Do you still sell these? (BTW, I’m amused by the title, “Will Write For Chocolate” because I *do* write for chocolate. My husband hires me to write and edit for his company, and I always make sure there’s a chocolate clause in there somewhere! Of course, I also write for peanuts… :D )

Best Wishes,
Jana

Hi Debbie,

I just wanted to thank you for your writing, your drawing and your humor. I’ve been going through your archives a little everyday, and they sooth my writing soul. And they make me laugh, of course.

You are doing a great thing, and I’ve been sharing your website with my writing friends.

That link says your site offers writing-related job postings. I cannot find this section anywhere on your site. Am I blind?

Debbie March 2, 2008 at 10:12 am

Hi Grant. As I mention in the page above, I no longer maintain a separate daily job listing section, sorry. There are already so many good job listing resources that I didn’t feel like duplicating.

Hi Debbie. Cool site! You mention that there are many good job listing resources. Would you mind listing a few? Thanks for your help.

Hey there, I just wanted to say that I put as a post in my blog a post you had called ‘Woodpile Gathering’ and I thought it made a lot of sense to me, so I thought I would share it with people on my blog. It made me laugh, so thanks for the awesome writing. I really find coporate lifestyle to be about bigger and better and more efficient, and yet managing to fail so well at that.
