Editor and Publisher had an interesting article recently about why some syndicated columnists and cartoonists have started their own blogs. Reasons cited include:
- Their blog isn’t for work, so there’s no limit to what they can write.
- To connect with their fan base.
- To give their readers a forum.
- To bring certain things to the attention of readers. Good for promotion/PR.
- A blog can help generate print content.
I have several blogs, though Blatherings may not really count as a blog. My reasons for keep blogs includes most of the reasons above. The main reason I started blogging in the first place was because it’s fun, a sort of creative playground where I can write about anything I feel like. Now I also post photos and illustrations.
I’ve gotten both writing and illustration assignments as a result of my blogs but to tell you the truth, I’d still be blogging if I didn’t get a cent in return. It’s too much fun, and I also find it helps stir up creative ideas as well as helping me improve my writing and illustration.
Blogging isn’t for everyone, but I wouldn’t give it up for anything.
