Branding the letter Q?

Home shopping channel QVC is aiming to rebrand the letter Q. QVC’s chief marketing officer made the following quote in The New York Times:

“We’d really like to own the 17th letter of the alphabet.”

I would really like to know how someone can own a letter, of all things. O3o Wouldn’t that mean that anyone that uses the letter Q for anything would be breaking a trademark or something like that?

Next time I turn in a paper, I’m putting ‘TM’ next to all my Q’s. That way I don’t have to worry about copyright infringement.
