
Someone recently asked me about current proofreading pay rates, and that got me to thinking about freelance writing pay rates in general. I posted about this a while back but rates have probably changed this since then, so here’s an updated list of resources you might find useful:

Writers-Editors.com Business Guide For Freelance Writers: guide to calculating hourly rates and net income.
Setting Your Freelance Writing Rates: by Jennifer Mattern.
How much should I charge and how long will it take?: from Catchthesun.net. Includes info for proofreading, copy editing, editing, other freelance writing work.
Writers.ca freelance rates guide: Canadian rates for freelance writers from PWAC (Professional Writers Assocation of Canada).
New Zealand freelance rates: Has a list of publications, rates per word, and comments from writers.
NUJ Rates (UK): Freelance journalist rates, compiled by the National Union of Journalists.
Australian Society of Authors Rates and Conditions: Suggested minimum rates for writers and illustrators working in the Australian market.

Copywriting fees by Randall Rensch.
Society for Editors and Proofreaders rates: proofreading, copy editing, rewriting rates (UK).
National Writers Union media rates: You have to be a member of NWU to access the database.

Another way to find out current rates is to check out online job boards or PayScale to see what companies/editors will pay, or browse rates set by other freelance writers (here’s an example).
