schribercat asked if I knew of an iPhone app that would help a writer keep track of their wordcount progress on a writing project. Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be one available yet (if I’m wrong about this, please let me know), but a company called Mariner Calc is apparently going to be releasing an Excel spreadsheet editor app for the iPhone soon. Though not specifically for writers, at least this will enable Excel-literate types to keep track of wordcount and other stats plus be able to keep freelance finances up-to-date as well.

This isn’t specifically iPhone, but I have used “Word Counter” (http://www.supermagnus.com/mac/Word_Counter/index.html) which is available as a Mac application and as widgets. Perhaps they’re working on an iPhone version?

I am not a application developer, but this morning I sat down with the iPhone SDK and laid out what i would like to see in a writers app. It would allow a person to create a story item (similar to a contact person) and then would have four main areas: character, plot, scene, and sketch (word sketching) area. (This could be transfered via WIFI to a comp similar to AirShare. Which I like—but also don’t like. AS should allow a user to just as easily unload a new text doc as it is to get one on. I don’t want to have to use a browser to get a new doc I just created.) I like the idea of being able to layout a whole story once one hits and have the basics already typed up. Each area (read tab) would have some basic fields—it would be nice to be able to customize them—that allows the user to quickly create. Character would allow for multiple entries. Anyway, I am sharing this here just in case there is a dev out there wanting to develop a new product.

Whoops, I meant TextGuru—not AirShare.
