I love the cartoon! However, in MY version the sign would say:
“PUBLISHERS WHO PAY PEANUTS ARE SQUIRRELEY.”
I just now looked up the word “squirreley” to make sure I was using it correctly. I was, INDEED, correct: “unpredictable, nervous, DEMENTED.” By the way, I am not proud. I am a freelance writer based in Europe and I will work for peanuts. My pitch is: “Reg Crowder covers the European Financial Markets with a North American perspective.” When negotiating a peanut-denominated contract, I would propose the following schedule, based upon a current price-to-the-farmer for peanuts of about 18 cents per pound (if they’re really lucky). Base hourly rate: 312.5 pounds of peanuts. Base daily rate (7 hours): 2,194 pounds of peanuts.
