(Updated Sun. Dec. 7th to correct source of Marc Simont quote)

For the interest of those who read my Emily Strange copyright post, it turns out that the illustrator of the Nate the Great series was -not- aware of the Emily the Strange overlap.
According to Laughing Squid, Marc Simont replies:
“Thank you for your interest in the Emily the Strange caper, which I just learned about a few days ago. Marjorie Sharmat, the author, and I have referred it to the legal department of the publisher. We have not had any contact with Cosmic Debris. Marjorie has the rights to the text and I have the rights to the illustrations. The illustrations are copyrighted in my name.”
Kudos to Chelsea of You Thought We Wouldn’t Notice for writing to Mr. Simont and letting him know.

I was updating my Gifts For Writers post with additional info when I came across these chocolate pencils, a collaboration between Japanese architect and designer Oki Sato with patissier (and Iron Chef champion) Tsujiguchi Hironobu, the man behind boutique dessert shops in Tokyo.
I’m both disappointed and relieved that these aren’t available in my neighbourhood.

(Updated Dec. 5: added links to other writer gift lists at the end of post as well as additional gift ideas.)
I received such a positive response to last year’s
Holiday Gifts For Writers, Librarians and Bibliophiles list that I thought I’d post one again; I’ve tried not to overlap too much with last year’s list, so please check that list for more ideas for writerly gifts.
As Market Watch columnist for Writersmarket.com, I browse publishing news on a daily basis. It’s been a tad depressing lately, what with all the layoffs and closings, and awareness that most editors are probably cutting down on how much new material they accept.
As the holiday season rapidly approaches, I suspect that I’m not the only one who is planning to be more frugal when buying presents. Here are some ideas for cool and interesting gifts that you can get your writer friends without blowing your holiday budget, as well as some higher-end options.

Book View Cafe is a consortium of over twenty professional authors with extensive publishing credits in the print world. Every day, new content available nowhere else will be served up on Book View Cafe: short stories, flash fiction, poetry, episodes of serialized novels, and maybe even a podcast now and then.
A great idea for connecting authors and old/new readers; I found out about it from my friend Maya Kaathryn Bohnhoff, who has a blog post about the craft of writing going up every Wednesday along with a fiction posting.
Book View Cafe is going to be partnering with PortableReading to distribute works by Book View Cafe authors over the Apple iPhone, iPod Touch and the popular social networking site Facebook. I’m especially excited about the e-editions; I’ve read at least half a dozen books on my iPhone so far and I’m always looking for sources of good material. There is a LOT of dreck out there available in digital format, and having all Book View Cafe contributors be established authors helps guarantee the quality of the site’s offerings.
Current content is free though some authors will be providing work for sale as premium.
You can find more info at:
http://www.bookviewcafe.com/
as well as the Book View Blog.
