According to The Telegraph, scientists have been analyzing the smell of old books and other documents.

Apparently old books “smell like grass, with a tang of acidity and a hint of vanilla.” I would have loved to be a fly on the wall during the sniff tests. Scientists are hoping that the method will help libraries and museums in determining the degradation of old books and historical documents.

Fascinating! I love the smell of old books and now I know why. :)
