To those who took up the 1000 wds/day or 500 wds/day challenge last year, how did you do?

And how many of you want to join me in the challenge THIS year? For those who haven’t heard of this challenge, the goal is to write 1000 words a day, at least six days a week. If you miss the occasional day or days, that’s ok — the goal is to keep up the motivation even if you sometimes slip up.

Too often, I find that writers start motivational challenges like NaNoWrimo with enthusiasm and good intentions, but give up when they start missing their daily targets for more than a few days in a row…undermining their confidence and defeating the purpose of the original challenge.

You can read more about the 1000 Words A Day Challenge here.

You can also aim to write 500 words a day instead (or you want to drop down from 1000 during the year) or the 250 Words A Day Writing Challenge (just added!).

I found this challenge very helpful so thank you very much. Actually wrote a post about it on my blog!

I finished the 1st draft of my novel using this method. Now that I am editing, I have a little bit of a different strategy (I have a list of ’scenes’ to edit and try to edit 1 scene a day) But I certainly will be challening myself to 1000 words a day when I start my next book!

I’d be very interested in the challenge. As a haiku writer, primarily, I think I should go for the lower goal. Thanks for the links. I’ll look into it.

Roni @ FictionGroupie January 4, 2010 at 12:16 pm

I’m joining, but only for five days a week. I like the idea of a weekend. :)

Tarrah January 4, 2010 at 12:17 pm

I ACCEPT THE CHALLENGE!

Jane January 4, 2010 at 12:31 pm

I accept this challenge. Though I’m doing the smaller version… You go ahead do the bigger one XD

Yuhri January 4, 2010 at 12:34 pm

Aw, heck, why not? ‘Tis the season!

Dustin Hansen January 4, 2010 at 1:02 pm

I’m in. I hope this counts revisions :)

Anna January 4, 2010 at 1:48 pm

Due to being a fulltime college student I know I can’t do 1000 or even 500, but I’ll try 250.
It fits in with my own goal for trying to write at least 3 hours a week.

Carol Anne January 4, 2010 at 2:16 pm

Since I write in a corporation for a living, I’m just going to count what I put on my three blogs and other creative writing. I’m going for the 500 words per day challenge.

Kelly Railton January 4, 2010 at 2:25 pm

Just what I needed. Am going to take on the 500 word challenge…I’m terrible without a target!

Thanks,
Kelly

Kellye January 4, 2010 at 2:27 pm

Great idea! Thanks!

Sherrie Petersen January 4, 2010 at 2:31 pm

Five hundred sounds manageable. I’ll give it a try :)

Adri January 4, 2010 at 2:58 pm

I picked up the 1,000-word challenge, and I’m finding it’s making daily writing much easier with a focus and a goal–and it’s actually helping me organize the rest of my life as I fit regular activities around making time for the 1,000 words. I’ve also started keeping a page on my blog recording daily word counts and my success or failure. So thank you for this; so far it’s been fun and has boosted my motivation (not just in writing; would you believe this pushed me to start working out again?) tenfold.

Nicole January 4, 2010 at 3:12 pm

I’m in! I have high hopes for this writing year, and I think this challenge is just what I need to accomplish my goals!

Reesha January 4, 2010 at 4:38 pm

This challenge was very helpful last year. Thanks, Debbie!

I plan to join you again this year as much as I can, even though I have a wedding to plan. I’ll try not to cheat by making lists of things to be done count as words! ;)

Reesha January 4, 2010 at 4:40 pm

Oh, and I accept the challenge of 1,000 words per day.

story_weaver January 4, 2010 at 6:24 pm

I’ll take on the 250 word challenge!

Heather January 4, 2010 at 7:06 pm

Write on! :^)

Thank you so much for the challenge, Debbie! I’m game!

ellanbethia January 4, 2010 at 7:32 pm

I’m game. I’ll do the 500 words a day; I need to get back into the habit of writing anyway, and having a word-count challenge seems a great motivator.
Thanks for the great idea.
P.S. I am going to count revisions done on my “project,” but only new paragraphs added (substituting words won’t count).

Tabitha January 4, 2010 at 11:49 pm

I will totally do 1000 words a day! Though I can’t do six days a week, so I’ll have to double up and do 2000 on one of the days.

Jessica January 5, 2010 at 8:28 am

I’m gonna start with 250 and if I’m a good girl then I’ll upgrade to 500.

Tasha January 5, 2010 at 9:47 am

I had planned to join up this year but the Fates have decided otherwise. I cannot write 1000 or 500 words a day consistently until I get a new computer! I will, however, write by hand until the headaches start.

PiscesMuse January 5, 2010 at 3:14 pm

I will be taking on the 1000 words a day challenge. I have big goals for 2010 and am hoping that with joining the proper communities I can achieve these goals. I will only be counting words written if it is towards one my stories though, so blog posts, e-mails and work stuff doesn’t count, as I could easily reach twice that amount daily by counting those other means. It is supposed to be a challenge – so I am aiming to push myself beyond 1000 words as often as I can.

Liz January 5, 2010 at 3:32 pm

I made it one of my career goals for this year to write 1K a day, so I guess I’ll join the challenge now that I know it exists! Thank you for this!

PaulaO January 5, 2010 at 4:34 pm

Count me in. 1000 words a day with the option to adjust later. Editing can drain a word count goal.

Tami January 5, 2010 at 7:18 pm

http://bit.ly/6qlRtn I’m reading: Setting goals….and hopefully sticking to them….AGAIN!

Rosalyn January 5, 2010 at 8:12 pm

1,000 words a day it is. Here’s to a new year of writing! Good luck to everyone else striving for a daily goal.

jayiin mistaya January 5, 2010 at 10:21 pm

I’m in.

Not only that, I have recruited a friend of mine. We have a new philosophy on life and writing (F*k it. We win.) that involves out-stubborning the universe, and this is just up our alley.

Thank you for the challenge -and the buttons!

MissAmande January 6, 2010 at 12:35 am

Hola everyone!

I hearby state that I will be doing the 250 word challenge. Starting today. I even brought my laptop to the Laundrette, so I can write while waiting for my coloureds to wash. :)

Reehana January 6, 2010 at 8:38 am

I’m picking the 1,000 words a day challenge. It really does get easier once you stick to a routine, and don’t get up until you’ve finished. Hopefully my family will get the hint and leave me to it.

Pennalynn January 6, 2010 at 9:21 am

I snagged up th 1000 word a day challenge. I did 500 last year and it was a little too easy for me.

Lenni January 6, 2010 at 5:01 pm

I’ll be trying the 250 and going from there. What an excellent idea! :D

carleen January 8, 2010 at 1:09 pm

I’m in. Probably 500 words/day. Also doing a challenge to write every day for 1st 32 days of the year.

Lynn January 8, 2010 at 5:53 pm

I love the flexibility! I often write over 1000 words in e-mails and responses to blogs. I’m sure I do over 250 words in my journal.

Debbie, I think we met somewhere online, nearly 10 years, and of course I don’t remember where. Maybe it was in conjunction with my e-zine, Writer Advice, which used to be called Haven’s List. Do you remember?

I’m joining got to finish my NaNoWriMo Novel. Am currently on 65,000 words with target set of 100,000 ….. would like it better if it was 2,000 words a day though ;)

Wendy January 28, 2010 at 1:48 pm

I’m a little late for New Year’s resolutions, but count me in for the 500 day challenge!
