New Apple iPad starts at $499 | iPad info roundup

For those who missed the liveblogging from the Apple announcement, here are some good summaries:

AppleInsider's overview of iPad specs and info about AT&T's no-contract iPad data plans, which run $15/mo. 250MB, $30 unlimited.

Apple iPad Just Tried To Assassinate Laptops:

It's the 'internet device' vision of a decade ago all over again, except now Apple can offer what is arguably the best user experience for internet and media consumption combined with a very reasonable (for a brand new gadget) price.

Am I getting one? Oh, yes. I've also started a new Twitter feed called iPadGirl. :-)

Thanks for the roundup--my initial reaction is that this is more of a threat to Kindle readers than it is to laptops. I am personally not getting one, but then I also don't own a Kindle or a smartphone. I don't like having lots of gadgets, don't like being plugged in (wirelessly or otherwise) all the time. If I were in the market for an ereader device, I'd go for the iPad, no question.

I want one, but between my iPhone, a netbook, and a laptop, I'm not sure I could justify getting one. But OH, oh, oh, I want one!

I was initially very excited about this as well (not that I could ever buy it, as Ramen is the breakfast, lunch and dinner option at my apartment), but then I started looking into the amount of restrictions Apple is putting on the iPad. Seeing as though you can only use approved apps, only downloaded content from itunes, and 'cracking' the iPad is considered 'illegal' by Apple, I got turned off. It's not that I want to be able to do anything I want, but it'd be nice to be able to customize a hefty purchase like this to fit what I could use.

My only thought is I wonder if it's a bit on the big side? I think it's bigger than a paperback book and bigger than say the Kindle, or have I got that wrong?

I'm not sure what it's to replace: laptops? e-readers? or maybe both? It does look like a very attractive device though.

my brain is still trying to catch up to the iPhone. this is all a bit much to take in, but still kind of cool.

It is larger than the kindle 2 but is about the same size as the kindle DX. From a students perspective i would love to see apple make some deals to get textbooks on it as I think it would be more useful than the kindle.
